Can EVMs be hacked or tampered with? 2024 Elections Fear

Can EVMs be hacked or tampered with?: Two days before the election results of Uttar Pradesh and four other states were declared, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday made shocking claims of “EVM theft” in Varanasi.

He said that Election Commission officials took away EVMs from a counting center in Varanasi and alleged that the Election Commission can no longer be trusted. These allegations may be quite serious but are no longer surprising. There is hardly any election in India when political parties do not make allegations of EVM hacking or tampering.
The Election Commission has denied the allegations on each occasion, saying that the machines are “unhackable”.

But are they? Experts seem to believe so.
In 2019, when several opposition parties made allegations of hacking, a committee of experts constituted by the poll panel concluded that the EVMs are tamper-proof. The committee said in its report that since EVMs have no networking component, it is impossible to manipulate them remotely.

“Tampering is possible only through physical access and the elaborate sealing process of EVMs undertaken by the ECI prevents this from happening,” it said.
The Election Commission has also said the same thing.

ECI-EVMs are not computer-controlled, are stand-alone machines, and are not connected to the Internet and/or any other network at any time. Therefore, there is no possibility of hacking by remote devices.” the EC said in a press release in 2017.
We are now coming to the allegation of physical molestation.

The same authors suggested that EVM distribution across constituencies makes it very difficult to tamper with.EVMs are distributed among constituencies through randomization. The EVMs used in India consist of two units: the BU, the voting unit, and the CU, the control unit. BU and CU are distributed independently and on voting day, both are linked. If any of them have been tampered with or changed, they are incompatible, Livemint.com reported citing the findings.
EC also gave a similar statement in its release that tampering at the manufacturer level is impossible.

Manufacturer Experts-Can EVMs be hacked

“After manufacturing, the EVMs are sent to the state and to the district within the state. The manufacturers are not in a position to know several years in advance which candidate will contest from a particular constituency and what the order of the candidates on the BU Also, each ECI-EVM has a serial number and the Election Commission can trace which machine is located where from its database using EVM-tracking software. Therefore, any manipulation at the manufacturing stage is ruled out. goes.”But can a Trojan horse be incorporated into a chip in CU?
The EC pointed out that stringent security measures make it impossible to introduce Trojan horses into the region.

This way:
– Once the ballot key is pressed in the CU, the CU enables the BU to register the vote and waits for the key to be pressed in the BU.
– During this period, all keys in the CU become inactive until the entire voting sequence is completed.
– Once any key (vote button of the candidate) is pressed by the voter in the BU, the BU sends the key information to the CU.
-The CU receives the data and acknowledges it by flashing the corresponding LED lamp in the BU.
– After enabling the ballot in the CU, only the ‘First Key Press’ is sensed and acknowledged by the CU.
– Thereafter, even if a voter continues to press other buttons, it is of no use as subsequent key presses will result in no communication between the CU and BU, nor will the BU register any key press.
In simple terms, there can be only one valid key press for each ballot enabled using CU, which is the first one. Once the valid key press (voting process) is completed, there will be no activity between the CU and BU until another ballot enabling key press is made.
Therefore, according to the Election Commission, it is impossible to send any malicious signal to the EVMs, through so-called “sequenced key presses”.

Like many states in the US, paper trail with EVMs has been made mandatory in India too.
Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) is an independent system linked to machines that allow voters to verify that their vote has been cast as intended.
The Election Commission says that VVPAT has made the voting process more transparent for the voters.
