Bengal student kills self, family alleges ragging

There have been several disturbing incidents in Bengal involving student suicides, and in each case, families have accused the students of being victims of bullying

  1. Uttam Mardy, a 22-year-old postgraduate student at North Bengal University, tragically took his own life at his home in Malda. His family claimed that he was subjected to severe bullying and mistreatment in the university hostel.
  2. Swapnadip Kundu, an 18-year-old first-year student at Jadavpur University, fell from the second-floor balcony of his hostel. His family alleged that he was a target of bullying by his fellow students.

In response to these incidents, the West Bengal police conducted investigations to understand what occurred on the night of August 9. According to the students’ families, their loved ones endured mental torment and sexual harassment for over two and a half hours.

The Commission for Protection of Child Rights strongly condemned these actions, describing the students’ deaths as “unforgivable crimes.”

On Monday, a postgraduate student from a tribal background who was enrolled at North Bengal University tragically took his own life at his home in Malda. The student’s family has raised serious concerns about hazing and mistreatment at the university hostel.

Uttam Mardy, a 22-year-old, had only attended classes at NBU for three days before he returned home. He was scheduled to enroll at Gour Banga University on the same Monday but was discovered hanging in the bathroom in the morning. According to his sister, Panchali Mardy, he had confided in the family about being physically abused by senior students at the hostel.
